FAQ - Browsing

1. I can connect to the Internet but web pages won't come up. What's going on?

Normally, this is just a simple connection problem. This will occur from time to time when Windows doesn't recognize that the system has an Internet connection established. To fix this, first, try restarting the computer. The Windows operating system runs on something called "system resources". These system resources practically run the system by monitoring everything that goes on when the system is turned on from mouse clicks to printing. When the system has been running for long period of time, these resources will become so low, that basic Windows components will stop functioning correctly. By restarting the computer, the system resources become refreshed and the simple connection problem you had will be fixed. If you have restarted the computer and the problem still persists, please call MobileTel Internet Technical Support.

5. How do I download files from the Internet: What exactly is downloading and how do I do it?

Downloading files from the Internet can be thought of as taking a file from someone else's desk and bringing it to yours. Even though the file is on your desk, you have to open it to get anything out of it. The same goes for downloading files off of the Internet. Downloading files from the Internet is just getting one file from another computer to yours. After you have that file, you have to open it to use it. Downloading files from the Internet is pretty simple. Normally all you have to do is click on the file link on the webpage that you wish to download. A "Save File" window will appear and all you have to do is select the location as to where you would like to save it. To make things simple, just save the file to your desktop so that after the file finishes downloading, it will be right on your desktop. After that, all you have to do is open the file (or find it if you didn't save it to your desktop, then open it) and it will begin to install itself.

6. What is a plug-in and why do I need one for certain sites: What it is and How to download?

A plug-in is an add-on program for your browser that will allow your browser to do certain "special" things. They are usually made to enhance your browser so that it can view multi-media online. For example, there are number of plug-ins for the Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer browsers that enable them to display different types of audio or video messages. Certain web sites will not allow you to view that page in its entirety if your browser is not equipped with the recommended browser plug-ins. You must download and install the recommended plug-in to enable the site's full potential. Some of the most common plug-ins are Macromedia Shockwave, Windows Media Player, and Real Networks RealPlayer. Usually a browser will inform you if you a certain plug-in is required to view a particular webpage. If you use Netscape Navigator or Netscape Communicator, it will require you to manually download and install the necessary plug-in. With Internet Explorer, plug-ins are a snap. If a webpage requires you to get a certain plug-in, Internet Explorer will usually automatically download and install it for you. Now that's technology working for the user!

7. When I go to sites that are secure, my browser tells me the Security Certificate has expired. What can I do to fix this?

Many older web browsers, including versions of Netscape Navigator and Netscape Communicator, have a digital certificate that ensures secure, authenticated online transactions. If you have a Netscape browser version older than 4.06 (released in August, 1998), you should update your browser to ensure a continued smooth experience while conducting secure online transactions such as shopping. The current version of Netscape is available now via for Free Download or can be ordered on CD-ROM. Please visit the Netscape webpage for downloading and ordering information at www.netscape.com
